11/11/2018 0 Comments NYX Foundation Face-offNYX Cosmetics has been a staple of mine ever since my first trip to ULTA. From "Soft Matte Lip Cream" to "Butter Lip Gloss", I've become quite a collector of this brand. One thing that I haven't really gotten into is their foundations. As far as foundations go, I'm usually a higher-end professional brand kind of girl, especially now that I'm getting a little older- I need a lot of filters, ingredients, blurring and what not. All of that good stuff- throw it all in there. However, now that I have my channel and I do the tutorials, I need some lower price products. I HATE using, a Too Faced or Tarte foundation when I'm not planning on going anywhere. So, I've been looking for really good drugstore foundations. When I think of the best that drugstore has to offer, my mind will automatically go to NYX and lately, NYX has been dropping SO many new launches that I've wanted to try. I was still going to wait a while BUT, during ALL of my ULTA Hauls, I happen to find not ONE but TWO of the foundations that I had been wanting to try for a while now. I decided to post a comparison on these two foundations. I have the NYX "Stay Matte Not Flat" foundation and the NYX "Total Control Drop" foundation. NYX has been a staple of mine for quite a while and I must say, I'm so excited to try and review these two. stay matte not flat (The first one) My Research This has been a starter on the NYX line up for quite some time. One of their early starters. It's a pretty low priced foundation coming in at 7.49. (I actually got it for .75 cents on a very good 90% off of clearance sale). According to ULTA, this foundation "provides full coverage with a mineral enriched matte finish". It's water based and oil free. They are pretty inclusive featuring 25 different shades. I think that for me, they seem to have a lot of different options. Looks like I could have one for my tanner times, one for my paler times and a true match for my skin. So here's my analysis after actually trying it. So, if you need to try it out for yourself right here. PACKAGING It's not hard to see where they cut cost on this one. It is some of the most simple packaging that I have personally ever seen. It's very plain. Just a simple soft plastic tube with black trim on top and bottom and the name in black across the center of the battle. You can see through it to the actual color of the foundation inside of it. Now, while I DO love packaging. I mean, you guys know that by now but, I try really hard to never let that dictate or effect my opinion on the product. But, when people ask why certain products are so expensive, it has a lot to do with things like packaging, yes sometimes it is a better formula but, it's also to pay for things like magnetic closures or a huge clear mirror. So, I'm not opposed to boring packaging because it usually has little to do with the actual effectiveness of the product itself. THE TEST OUT First of all, I legit thought that it was WAY too old to purchase much less use, because of the way that it had separated. I have NEVER, used a foundation that had that much water in it. As I tried to apply it it like threw up on me. And it looked absolutely disgusting. So, I closed it back up, shook it and then tried to apply it again. This time water actually shot out of it like a fountain! After that, I tried kneading it in the bottle to see if that would help. After that I shook it again. So- after about 10 minutes of shaking the bottle, I finally read the back. What did it say in the directions? SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING. Ok so, here's why that's important. I took that to mean that, this isn't an old product. That's just how it is formulated. It's just how it works. It's water based so I guess that when you use it for the first time, it's just like that. I've used it a few times since then and I didn't have the same problem. The color was nice, a little light for my skin tone but, I did like it. It did feel slightly heavy. It felt almost like applying a paint to my face but, remember - this is supposed to be a full coverage foundation so, it makes sense that it would need to be thick enough to fill in and cover imperfections. I wore it throughout the day and it did crease and crack a little but, nothing major. I went out in the heat with it, got caught in the rain, cried, and it stayed put! It stayed put and it stayed matte! It also left me with very little transfer. I feel like it being under 10 bucks originally makes it a steal. I got a compliments on my makeup and just on my look in general ALL DAY, with this stuff. Can't argue with results. I really liked the finished product. Total control drop foundation (The second one) My Research The total control foundation is a pretty recent launch. It’s the newest one that I remember before the “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop” foundation. I remember when it came out, they received rave reviews for the fact that it DID offer customers total control. You get the option to dictate your own coverage by drop number. 2 drops for minimal coverage, 4 drops for medium, 6 drops for total coverage. From what I’ve seen of it, it looks very runny. Very light which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For me, I don’t really like a heavy foundation. I like a light-weight foundation that feels like nothings there. This one retails for 13.99, which is a little bit pricey for a drugstore brand (again, I got it on sale for a much lower price of 1.40). It comes in 30 shades which makes them pretty inclusive as well (I have to say, NYX usually does a pretty good job with that). I remember when this launched, it wasn't that long ago. It was like the launch before this new "Can't stop, won't stop." launch.. I remember this because it was really harped on that it would be able to be customized for individual use. So, here's your link, if you want to check it out for yourself right here. Packaging So, compared to the other foundation, it's easy to see where they spent more money. This foundation really looks very high-end, it looks very prestige and professional. It's a frosted glass bottle, which features a dropper. It really reminds me a lot of one of my favorite foundations, the Smashbox Cosmetics, BB Water. It came in a very simple yet elegant little box. I really liked it but, as I said, it's so clear to see which one is newer and for sure which one they spend more money on. The test out First let me say that the shade that I selected (Cinnamon) was almost a dead-on match. Here's why this is so amazing! This is a miracle because, usually when things get to clearance, it's so hard to find what you're looking for. I usually wind up buying something to use as a highlight or as a contour. This one is so close to a perfect, I've never found a match that good, especially being that it cost me a dollar. The dropper thing is kind of weird, only because, I was unsure about how to apply it. so, here's what I did. I dropped some on the back of my hand and then used my brush to apply it. Only WAY after I finished shooting did it occur to me that I COULD have just applied it straight to my face and then buffed it out. It just didn't occur to me. This foundation claims that you can customize your coverage. It says that for light coverage you do one drop. For medium, 2 drops and of coarse for full coverage, 3 drops. Here's my issue with that. So- I don't get how, we're supposed to measure our drops. Is it three drops on the back of the hand? Three drops on a beauty blender? Or is it applying it to the face three times. It's hard to judge. Calling it "full coverage", I think is probably a stretch. I did really like the final look of it. And the Winner is So, it's been such a long time since I wore or used a drugstore foundation. Both of them originally retail for under 20 bucks. I purchased both of them for less than 2 bucks each. I'm not going to lie to you, I was a little apprehensive to test these products but, I must say both of them looked amazing on the completed look. They both lasted all day but, neither one of them were full coverage, which is fine by me. I'm not a heavy foundation kind of girl. Especially when I'm doing a lot of layers. In this case - they are both good and are both very similar but, due to the weight of it, I'm going to give it to up to the NYX Total Control drops.
